Child Seats in Minicabs: What Parents Need to Know

Travelling with young children requires a bit more planning than jumping in a cab on your own, and one of the most common questions parents have is whether minicabs and private hire vehicles need to have child seats. The answer is slightly more nuanced than a simple yes or no, and it's worth understanding the legal position before you book.

The UK Law on Child Seats in Taxis and Minicabs

Under UK law, children must use an appropriate child car seat whenever one is available in a licensed taxi or private hire vehicle. However, there is a legal exemption that applies specifically to licensed taxis and private hire vehicles: if a child seat is not available in the vehicle, children aged three and over may travel without one, sitting in the rear seat and using an adult seatbelt if one is fitted.

Children under three years old are not permitted to travel in a licensed taxi or private hire vehicle without a child seat if the vehicle has seatbelts fitted. If the vehicle does not have rear seatbelts, a child under three can travel in the rear, but this applies to very few modern vehicles in practice.

This exemption is specific to licensed taxis and private hire vehicles, and it does not apply to private journeys made in personal cars, where the full child seat rules always apply. The responsibility under the law rests with the driver, not the parent, for ensuring the rules are followed.

What This Means in Practice

While the exemption exists in law, relying on it isn't the safest approach when travelling with very young children. The exemption is a legal get-out for the operator, not a safety standard. A child seat exists because it significantly reduces the risk of injury in a collision, and no legal exemption changes that physical reality.

If you're travelling regularly with infants or toddlers, the safest and most practical approach is to either bring your own travel car seat, or book with an operator who can accommodate your needs and confirm the vehicle setup in advance.

SEN Transport and School Runs

For families with children who have special educational needs or disabilities, standard booking processes don't always cover every requirement. Our SEN transport service is designed specifically with these journeys in mind, with drivers who understand the additional care and consistency that SEN passengers need. If your child travels to school regularly and requires a reliable, familiar service, this is worth exploring.

We also operate a school run taxi service for families who need a dependable, regular pickup and drop-off, removing the stress of the morning routine without having to rely on a different driver or vehicle each day.

Tips for Travelling with Children in Minicabs

  • Always inform your operator at the time of booking that you'll be travelling with children and specify their ages.
  • If you're travelling with a baby or infant (under three), bring your own portable car seat if at all possible, and let the driver know in advance so they can accommodate it.
  • For airport transfers, book a vehicle that comfortably fits your full party and all luggage without needing to fold or compress the car seat. Our vehicle dimensions and carrying capacity page shows exactly what fits in each vehicle class.
  • Ask the operator directly whether their vehicles have rear seatbelts fitted, as this affects which legal rules apply.
  • For regular school or activity runs, consider setting up a personal account so the same driver handles your child's journey consistently.
