Heathrow Airport Terminal Guide for Passengers

Heathrow is one of the busiest airports in the world, and with five terminals spread across a large site, it's easy to see why so many passengers feel uncertain about exactly where they need to be. Whether you're arriving and looking for your driver, or departing and working out the quickest way in, knowing your terminal in advance makes the whole experience far less stressful. This guide walks through each Heathrow terminal, what to expect, and where to meet your minicab or transfer driver.

Why Knowing Your Terminal Matters

Heathrow's terminals aren't just different buildings; they're effectively separate transport hubs. Each one has its own drop-off and pick-up areas, its own access roads, and in some cases its own dedicated short-stay car park. If your driver is told the wrong terminal, or you head to the wrong building after landing, you can lose valuable time, especially if you're catching a connecting flight or trying to get home after a long journey.

Before you travel, check your terminal directly on your booking confirmation or boarding pass rather than assuming based on your airline, as some airlines operate from more than one terminal depending on the route.

Terminal 2

Terminal 2, also known as The Queen's Terminal, mainly serves Star Alliance airlines, including United and Air Canada, alongside a number of other carriers. It's a relatively modern terminal with a straightforward layout.

  • Arrivals: After collecting your luggage, signs will direct you towards the arrivals concourse, where pre-booked minicab and taxi pickups are typically arranged at a designated point just outside.
  • Departures: Drop-off for departures is at the front of the terminal, with a short walk into the check-in hall.

If you've pre-booked a minicab to Heathrow, your driver will usually arrange to meet you at a clearly signed point near arrivals, so it's worth confirming this detail with your driver or operator ahead of time.

Terminal 3

Terminal 3 handles a mix of long-haul and international flights, including several major US and Asian carriers. It's one of the older terminals, and the layout can feel slightly more spread out than Terminal 2 or Terminal 5.

  • Arrivals: Baggage reclaim leads through to a busy arrivals hall, with set-down and pick-up points a short walk from the main doors.
  • Departures: Terminal 3's departures drop-off sits close to the terminal entrance, though it can get congested at peak times, so allow a few extra minutes if you're being dropped off during a busy period.

Terminal 4

Terminal 4 is positioned slightly apart from the other terminals, closer to the southern perimeter of the airport, and serves a number of international airlines including several Asian and Middle Eastern carriers.

  • Arrivals: Because of its location, pickup arrangements at Terminal 4 are particularly worth confirming with your driver in advance. Set-down and pick-up areas are clearly signed once you exit the building.
  • Departures: The terminal has its own dedicated drop-off zone directly outside departures.

Terminal 5

Terminal 5 is Heathrow's largest terminal and the dedicated home of British Airways and Iberia, along with other oneworld alliance carriers. It's a major hub, so the terminal itself is large and can take longer to navigate than the others.

  • Arrivals: Terminal 5 arrivals lead out to a large concourse with clearly marked zones for pre-booked pickups, separate from the general taxi rank. If you've arranged a Heathrow meet and greet service, this is typically where your driver will be waiting with a name board.
  • Departures: Drop-off at Terminal 5 departures is straightforward, with a covered area directly outside the main entrance, though it's worth allowing extra time given the terminal's size, particularly if you're checking in luggage.

General Tips for a Smooth Heathrow Pickup or Drop-off

A few small things make a noticeable difference when you're navigating any Heathrow terminal:

  • Share your flight number when you book. This allows your driver to track your flight and adjust the pickup time automatically if you're early or delayed, so you're not left waiting, and your driver isn't either.
  • Know your terminal before you fly, not after. Double-check it on your booking confirmation a day or two ahead of travel.
  • Allow extra time at Terminal 5. It's the largest terminal at Heathrow, and the walk from check-in to your gate can take longer than you'd expect.
  • Confirm your meeting point in advance. If you're being collected, a clear meeting point agreed beforehand saves time and avoids any confusion in a busy arrivals hall.
  • Keep your phone charged. It's the easiest way to stay in contact with your driver if anything changes on the day.

Heathrow Terminal 5: A Closer Look

Because Terminal 5 is so large and handles such a high volume of passengers as British Airways' main London hub, it deserves a bit more detail than the other terminals. The building is split into three sections, T5A, T5B and T5C, connected by an internal transit system, so depending on your gate, you may need to factor in extra walking or transfer time between check-in and boarding.

For arrivals, baggage reclaim at Terminal 5 can take longer than at the smaller terminals simply because of the volume of flights landing there. Once you've collected your luggage, the arrivals concourse is well signed towards both the general taxi rank and the pre-booked pickup zones, but it's worth knowing that these are in different locations, so check your booking confirmation for the exact meeting point rather than heading for the first taxi sign you see.

Getting Between Heathrow Terminals

If you're connecting between flights at different terminals, Heathrow operates a free inter-terminal transfer service, including the Heathrow Express and dedicated transfer buses, depending on which terminals you're moving between. This isn't something you need to worry about if you're being collected by a pre-booked driver, since your transfer will be arranged directly to your actual terminal, but it's useful to know if your connecting flight departs from a different building from the one you land in.

It's also worth noting that Terminal 4 sits apart from the others, so transfers to and from it can take a little longer than moving between Terminals 2, 3 and 5, which are more closely clustered together.

Heathrow Drop-off and Set-down Charges

Heathrow operates a drop-off charge for vehicles using the short-stay set-down areas directly outside each terminal, which applies to private cars as well as some taxi and minicab pickups depending on how the journey is arranged. This is one of those costs that can catch people out if it isn't made clear in advance.

When you book a transfer with a reputable operator, this charge should either be built into your fixed fare or handled by your driver as a standard part of the service, so you're not presented with an unexpected cost on arrival. If you're ever unsure whether a quoted price includes this, our payments page explains how charges are handled, or you can simply ask before you book.

Heathrow Terminals and Specific Airlines

While airlines can and do change terminals from time to time, here's a general guide to where the major carriers tend to operate from at Heathrow:

  • Terminal 2: Star Alliance carriers including United, Air Canada, Lufthansa and Singapore Airlines.
  • Terminal 3: A mix of long-haul carriers including Delta, Virgin Atlantic, Cathay Pacific and several others.
  • Terminal 4: Several SkyTeam and Middle Eastern carriers, including Etihad and Korean Air.
  • Terminal 5: British Airways, Iberia and other oneworld alliance airlines.

Because this can change, always confirm your terminal directly through your airline or booking confirmation rather than relying on general knowledge, especially if you've flown with the same airline from a different terminal in the past.

Planning Your Journey to Heathrow

When you're getting to the airport, a little planning goes a long way. Check the Heathrow website or your airline's app the day before travel to confirm your terminal hasn't changed, and build in extra time for the M25 or M4 if you're being driven, since traffic around Heathrow can be unpredictable at peak times, particularly during school holidays and bank holiday weekends.

If you're travelling from further afield in Surrey, allowing a buffer of at least 30 minutes beyond the estimated journey time is sensible, especially for an early outbound flight where missing your slot isn't an option. A pre-booked driver who knows the route well will usually build this buffer into your pickup time automatically. This applies whether you're being collected from Kingston and the surrounding area or further out across Surrey.

For regular business travellers flying from Heathrow, it's also worth setting up a corporate account so that bookings and billing are handled centrally rather than arranged trip by trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I know which terminal I'm flying from? Check your booking confirmation or boarding pass directly, since airlines can operate from more than one terminal depending on the specific route or time of year.
  • Can I switch terminals if I get it wrong? Heathrow's terminals are linked by free transfer services, but this takes time, so it's far better to confirm your terminal correctly in advance than to rely on switching on the day.
  • Is Terminal 5 only for British Airways? It's the main base for British Airways and Iberia, but a small number of other oneworld alliance flights also use it.
  • Will my driver know where to meet me? A driver familiar with Heathrow will confirm the correct terminal and meeting point with you ahead of time, so there's no uncertainty when you land.
